How to Water Newly Planted Shrubs in the Fall and Winter

Drip Irrigation
When it comes to watering newly planted shrubs, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Many of the plants we love here in the Triangle — like azaleas, hollies, and other regional favorites — have very different water needs. Because of this, creating a “perfect” watering schedule can be challenging.

The key to success is watering slowly and deeply, especially on the day your new plants are installed. Your irrigation system’s plant zones will typically include either drip irrigation or overhead irrigation, and the approach differs slightly for each.

Drip irrigation is ideal for new plantings, as it delivers water directly to the root zone at a slow, steady rate. Don’t be surprised if you need to run a drip zone for several hours during the first watering to ensure deep saturation.

Overhead irrigation can make deep watering more challenging, so it’s best to run multiple shorter cycles in a single day. This allows time between cycles for the water to soak into the soil, encouraging deep root growth rather than surface watering.

For ongoing care:

  • Smaller plants should be checked every 3–5 days for adequate moisture.
  • Larger shrubs and trees should be checked every 5–7 days, especially when planted in the fall.
  • During the winter months, you may still need to water if we experience an extended dry spell. Consistent, deep watering helps your new plants establish strong roots and thrive year-round.

Smart Irrigation Makes It Easier

Programming traditional irrigation controllers for different days and multiple cycles can be tricky. Fortunately, the future of irrigation is here — with smart controllers that allow you to program and monitor your system right from your phone.
